About DiPauls – the Early Years
A Bit of History...

We are Paul and Diane Spohn and live in a country-type setting in Russell Township, Ohio (that’s just east of Cleveland). We have been involved with dogs in one way or another in what seems to be forever! Our first dog together (1982) was a delightful Malti-Poo "Rocky" who lived with Diane and her 3 children and was later "adopted" by Paul when he became part of the family. As we planned our marriage we knew that dogs would become a very important part of our life together. Diane had always dreamed of owning an Irish Setter when one day Paul surprised her by taking her to see a litter of 8-week-old pups and Diane came home with "Kelly".

During those early years Diane worked as Manager of payroll, workers compensation, unemployment, some personnel and secretary for a 25-store McDonald’s Restaurant franchise. Kelly would stay at home with Rocky. Paul owned Barker’s Camera Shop, a small retail camera store, located on Main Street in Chagrin Falls which is a very picturesque "New England" type village; just a 10 minute drive from home. Paul wanted to take Kelly to work with him, but Diane wanted Kelly to be at home to spend time with the children and with Diane when she came home from her job each day and on the weekends. It was time for Paul to again have his "special" dog who would accompany him to work daily.

As we browsed through the AKC Breed book deciding on what breed of dog would be the perfect one for "going to work" with Paul, we came across the German Shorthaired Pointer... Brigitte came into our lives. Brigitte drove to work everyday with Paul and became quite well known in Chagrin as she waited on customers, accompanied Paul’s daughter to the bank and was even written up in the Chagrin Valley Times Newspaper on several occasions.

At age 3 years our Irish Setter, Kelly, was bred to Ch Fleetwood Farm’s St. Patrick and produced 11 puppies. Bonni and Patrick remained with us – now we had 3 Irish setters. Bonni and Patrick stayed at home with Kelly and Rocky. A few years later Brigitte was bred to Ch Sonnenschein’s Maxmum Effort producing 8 puppies. "Little" Max remained with us – now we had 2 German Shorthaired Pointers. Originally Paul had been told that he would probably never be able to keep Brigitte the GSP conveniently at the store.

Now Paul was again being told by "everyone" that what had been an unusual circumstance with Brigitte would never be duplicated with Max as, no matter how well trained, you would never be able to keep 2 GSP’s from sneaking out the doors when opened, romping and knocking items off shelves, etc.

Well now all that was about to change and by quite a bit! Enter Patrick the Irish Setter! A short time after Max joined Brigitte in going to the store, Patrick developed some medical problems and Diane decided it was time for him to join his buddies and "go to work" daily also. Now all the so-called "advisors of what couldn’t be done" were to explode in disbelief ... at the store there were now 2 Shorthairs and 1 Irish Setter – front and rear doors wide open, children and adults coming in (in many cases just to see the dogs) and it was successful and it continued that way until the close of the business in December 1996. Yes they did behave – Yes they did not break items off the shelves – Yes Paul was able to keep both the front and back doors wide open - Yes they became "famous" in Chagrin Falls! Barker’s Camera Shop went on to sponsor the annual "Picture Your Pet With Santa". We did that for many many years donating the film and processing to benefit the rescue efforts of Valley Save-A-Pet.

In those early years Paul and Diane were not involved much in dog shows but we did show in obedience competition. Brigitte at age 8 years gained the title of CD in just 5 shows while her son, Max, did get shown in conformation and did obtain a Show Championship title followed by an Obedience title earned in just 3 shows and also received his Canine Good Citizen title. Max was also entered in two sled-dog racing competition events on two different weekends and he, along with his girlfriend Dotty, won their 2-dog-hitch class in both races coming in over two minutes faster than the northern breeds!
